Marketing of off Season vegetables like pea, frenchbean, cabbage, cauliflower, cabbage, potato (pahari aaloo), capsicum (shimla mirch) etc grown in hills of Himachal

The major vegetables marketed in APMC yard and peas, frenchbean, cauliflower, cabbage, capsicum and potato. The marketing season start from April to October. The first crop comes is pea, the arrival gain momentum from may onwards and if all remain good, there is glut in market from 20th april to 15 may. The vegetables are marketed in local mandies of north india and most of produce is again auctioned in consuming market yards. Major chunk of produce is observed in delhi azadpur market. There are also a few buyers in market for vegetables, and the local traders cum commission agents act as buyers as they have to honor the contracts already taken from various traders across the states. The price during the auction is opened as per the demand of distance markets, generally price will depends upon the demand and supply of delhi market.

The price also depends upon the arrival of produce and completion of truck load by the traders. The time of auction is also important as truck have to leave on time so as to reach delhi before the no entry time in the NCR. In case of other markets of Mumbai, gujrat, and maharastra market produce is dispatched to delhi and thereafter same is again reloaded in other vehicle carring the produce to other markets for selling.

The pea and French bean is unpacked on the floor of auction platform and after auction same is again graded, sorted and repacked in gunny bags of 45-50 kg weight as per the requirement of destination market. The cabbage and cauliflower is sold directly in gunny bages and no repacking is done. The arrival of cabbage and cauliflower in APMC yard is comparatively less than its production due to non-availability of sufficient space in yard and buyers are also less due to which the prices are generally low.

The others factors which affects the prices of vegetables are:

1.      In dhalli markets there are buyers of vegetables from kolkatta, who participate in auction. Till then their orders are not complete, there is rise in price of produce. When their orders competes and more produce is available in market for auction price falls consequently.

2.      Timely availability of produce as per the requirement of distance market is also crucial. Completion of truck load according the entry time in NCR will fetch good price during auction.

3.       Quality of produce like tenderness and length of pencil bean, shape of pod and uniform size of peas fetch good price.
